Publishing’s heavy hitters heading to Berlin


Michael Golden, Vice Chairman of The New York Times, Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, Kevin Beatty, CEO of dmg media, and Rajiv C. Lochan, MD & CEO of Kasturi & Sons Ltd. (India) – lead an all-star line-up of speakers coming to this year’s IFRA and DCX.

Successful, high-volume publishing needs new business models and ideas that drive innovation. The keynotes of this year’s IFRA World Publishing Expo and DCX Digital Content Expo will examine how media companies can successfully navigate the journey they need to undertake to transform their companies.

 As a keynote speaker, Michael Golden, Vice Chairman of the Board of The New York Times (NYT) and former Vice Chairman of the company, will open the IFRA and DCX conferences outlining his approach to this challenge. The NYT proved that readers will pay for good and meaningful content on the web: subscriptions in both digital and print are on the rise. This surge is not only based on a high quality journalism but also on new strategies of change like using data and information to drive the business or transforming the product experience to make it an essential part of people’s daily life. Golden, who is also First Vice-President of WAN-IFRA, will discuss how he helped lead The New York Times Company through multiple periods of monumental change.


Mathias Döpfner tranforming Axel Springer into a digital powerhouse

Mathias Döpfner, the chairman of the board of Axel Springer, Europe’s largest digital publishing house, with numerous multimedia news brands, such as BILD, WELT and FAKT, and more than 15,000 employees, has good news to share: In the first quarter of this year, the company reported that its digital media grew organically by 10.7 percent and it generated 80 percent of the group’s EBITDA. “Axel Springer is no longer BILD with attached digital business”, he pointed out. He will share his recipe of success and will make an outlook on future developments.

From Daily Mail to Kasturi & Sons Ltd. in India

Kevin Beatty, CEO of dmg media, will also have his say at the conference stage of IFRA / DCX in Berlin. He will explain how dmg media, publishers of the Daily Mail, Metro and MailOnline – the world’s largest English-language newspaper website – has expanded globally, and how the Daily Mail is continuing to grow its brand. In addition, a special guest from India will discuss how they are growing their businesses in print and online: Rajiv C. Lochan, MD & CEO at Kasturi & Sons Ltd., a 138-year old company, which publishes The Hindu and group publications in India.
